Bush and beach itinerary especially prepared for Bastian Sacher:

  • 6 full days on safari at two different wildlife destinations
  • 4 full days Sun, Sand and Sea on the cost of Mozambique

Day 01

Arrive OR Tambo International Airport – Johannesburg, own arrangements. On arrival, after clearing customs and immigration you will walk the short distance to the domestic departures hall which is situated in the same building and board the 1 hour domestic flight to Eastgate Airport – Hoedspruit. On arrival at Eastgate Airport you will be met by a representative of Dive The Big 5 for the 90 minute road transfer to the Klaserie Game Reserve, which forms part of the Greater Kruger Park Conservancy, and Elephant’s Drift. Elephants Drift is situated on nearly 6 000 hectares of undeveloped, unfenced, pristine wilderness area within Kruger. On arrival at Elephant’s Drift you will have time to settle into your chalet before meeting in the lounge for afternoon tea / coffee and cake before boarding the open 4x4 Land Rover for the afternoon / evening game drive (“safari”). At sun set you will stop for sundowners whilst you watch the African Sun dip below the horizon and the heavens light up with hundreds of thousands for stars! You will continue with the safari looking for the elusive nocturnal animals with the air of a powerful spot lamp. Depending on animal activity you will return to Main Camp at about 08h00 for dinner. Overnight at Elephant’s Drift Main Camp on a fully inclusive basis.

Day 02

Your ranger will wake you just before dawn for tea, coffee and rusks before you depart on the morning game drive. You will return to Main Camp for breakfast before setting off on foot for Explorers Tented Camp. This is about a 2½ hour “easy” walk through virgin bush. Your ranger will prepare a light lunch for you when you arrive at Explorers Camp. When it begins to cool off, at about 15h00, you will set off with your armed ranger and tracker for your afternoon walk. As the sun begins to set you will rendezvous with the Land Rover and continue with your safari on the Land Rover using the spot lamp to spot the nocturnal animals such as bush baby, civet, serval, lion, leopard and many others. You will return to Explorers Camp at about 20h00 when your ranger will light the campfire and while you relax and listen to all the night sounds your ranger will prepare dinner over the open fire. Overnight at Explorers Camp on a fully inclusive basis.

Day 03

Another day spent in the wilds of Africa. Wilder than this it just doesn’t get!! Your ranger will wake you just before first light and after a mug of steaming coffee you will set off on foot with your armed ranger and tracker looking for Africa’s “Big 5” on a one on one basis. It’s very seldom that you actually encounter them on foot as they smell, hear and see you, way before you see them. But the excitement of coming across fresh “spoor” (tracks) is something to be experienced. Your ranger will also point out the smaller thinks like community spider nests, dung and how to identify it, beetles, bugs, and birds. He will identify trees and explain the uses and medicinal qualities of the leaves, bark and roots to the indigenous peoples of Africa. A walking safari in the bush is a whole new experience and opens up a whole new world. As the run begins to rise in the sky and the day heats up you will return to Explorers Tented Camp for a hot “brunch” and the rest of the day is spent lazing in camp until it begins to cool off again. Then it’s time to set off once again for the afternoon trail and evening safari. Overnight at Elephant’s Drifts Explorers Tented Camp on a fully inclusive basis.

Day 04

You will again be woken at the crack of dawn for the morning walk which will take you back to Main Camp in time for breakfast. The rest of the day is spent watching the animals come to the waterhole, which is right in front of the camp, to quench their thirst in the heat of the day, or you could the time at the pool, just so long as the elephants haven’t got there first!! After lunch, at about 15h00 you will set off again in the Land Rover for the night safari. Overnight at Elephant’s Drift on a fully inclusive basis.

Day 05

After the early morning game drive and breakfast you will be collected from Elephants Drift at 10h00 by Dive The Big 5 for the 3 hour road transfer to the Kruger National Park and Rhino Post and Plains Camp which is situated on a 12 000 hectare private concession within this world famous wildlife reserve.

Rhino Post consists of 12 luxury chalets and Plains Camp consists of 4 luxury en suite tents.

Whilst staying at Rhino Post all your game viewing is done from "open" safari Land Rovers, with two game drives a day. An early morning game drive which sets off just after sunrise and returns to camp at about 09h00 for breakfast and the afternoon/evening game drive which departs camp at about 16h00. Depending on animal activity you will return to camp from the afternoon/evening game drive at about 20h00 for dinner.

At Plains Camp most of your game viewing is done on foot with your armed ranger and tracker however after the afternoon walk, just before sunset, you will rendezvous with the open 4x4 Land Rover somewhere in the bush and continue your game viewing from the relative safely of the vehicle while you look for the nocturnal animals with the aid of a powerful spot-lamp.

Although the programme at Rhino Post / Plains Camp is similar to that of Elephant’s Drift, it’s quite a different safari experience. The terrain is different, the vegetation is different and so are the types of animals that you can expect to encounter. Elephants Drift is more mountainous and rugged with more hills and gully’s whilst Rhino Post and Palins Camp is situated in open grassland which attracts the heard animals like Wildebeest, Zebra and Buffalo which is very unlikely that you will get to encounter these “plains” animals at Elephants Drift. Elephant’s Drift and Rhino Post / Plains Camp offer two totally different wildlife experiences.

On arrival at Rhino Post at about 13h00 you will settle into your chalet and after freshening up you will assemble on the deck for afternoon tea and coffee before setting off for the evening game drive.

Sundowners will be enjoyed somewhere in the heart of the African bush whilst you watch the African sun slip slowly below the horizon. After sundowners you will continue game viewing using a powerful spot-lamp to spot the nocturnal animals not normally encountered during daylight hours, leopard, lion, civet, serval, nag-apies, African Wild Cat etc. Depending on game activity you will return to Camp at about 20h00 for dinner which is served in the 'boma" alongside a roaring wood fire under the African stars. Overnight at Rhino Post on a fully inclusive basis. (All meals and game activities).

Day 06

After the early morning game drive and breakfast you will transfer by Land Rover to Plains Camp, game viewing along the way. After arriving at Plains Camp and settling into your "tent" you will meet on the deck for afternoon tea and coffee before setting off on foot looking for Africa's "Big 5" with your armed ranger and tracker. This is an experience not to be missed and is privilege to only a few. All walking trails in Kruger are restricted to a maximum of 8 people per group under the guidance of an experienced ranger and local "native" tracker. This “game walk” is by no means an endurance test and the pace is set by the slowest member of the group. The terrain over which you walk is flat and each walk is about the length of an 18 hole golf course and takes about 4 hours with many stops en route to examine spoor, droppings and the smaller things that you miss whilst being in a vehicle. As the sun is setting you will rendezvous with the Land Rover for "sun-downers" and then carry on with your game viewing in the Land Rover looking for the nocturnal animals with the aid of a powerful spot-lamp. Depending on animal activity you will return to Plains Camp at about 20h00 for dinner under the stars beside a roaring log fire. Overnight at Plains Camp on a fully inclusive basis.

Day 07

Another magic day spent in the African bush at Plains camp. You will be woken for tea or coffee before setting off with your ranger and tracker for your morning game walk. You will return to camp at about 09h00 before the sun gets too hot for walking and for any animal activity. The remainder of the day is spent in camp cooling off around the pool whilst you watch the animals come down to the water-hole to quench their thirst. After "brunch", when the day starts to cool down, you will set off once more for the late afternoon game walk and night drive in the Land Rover. Overnight at Plains Camp on a fully inclusive basis.

Day 08

After the early morning walk and breakfast at Plains Camp you will be collected from Plains Camp for the return 4x4 game viewing trip to Rhino Post, where you will be collected by Dive The Big 5 for the two hour road transfer back to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, in time to connect with your 1 hour domestic flight back to OR Tambo International Airport – Johannesburg. On arrival at OR Tambo International you will walk the short distance to the City Lodge which is situated within the airport complex. Overnight at the City Lodge – OR Tambo International Airport on a bed and breakfast basis.

Please note that the accommodation at Rhino Post / Plains Camp may not follow the sequence as detailed in the above itinerary. The order in which you stay at Rhino Post and at Plains Camp may differ from the above.
