2-night / 1-full day add-on safari in the Hluhluwe / iMfolozi Game Reserve in KwaZulu/Natal:

Suggested itinerary based on 2019 rates:

Full-year 2019 – high season rates.

After being transferred from Protea Banks, Aliwal Shoal to King Shaka International Airport – Durban, you will be picked up from King Shaka International Airport, at a time to be advised, by a representative of Dive The Big 5 for the 390 km / 4h30 road transfer through the heart of KwaZulu/Natal to Hilltop Camp in the Hluhluwe / iMfolozi Game Reserve.

Or, if you are staying and diving at Sodwana Bay, you will be picked up from Coral Divers, in Sodwana Bay, at a time to be advised, for the 125-km / 02h30 road transfer from Coral Divers to Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe.

The idea is to get you to Hilltop Camp by 14h30 so that they have time to check-in and join the afternoon safari which departs from Hilltop Camps reception at about 15h30. Please check the departure time when checking-n as this changes from month to month, depending on sunset time.

Hluhluwe is one of the oldest and largest game parks in South Africa; the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park is renowned for its wide variety of bird and animal life. Besides ‘The Big Five’ (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), the elusive cheetah, wild dogs and many other well – known Bushveld species inhabit the park, offering the visitors a rich game viewing experience. The park covers 96 000 hectares, and comprises three reserves: Hluhluwe and Umfolozi – two of Africa’s oldest game reserves, both founded in 1895 – and the linking Corridor Reserve, proclaimed in 1989. Hluhluwe has the distinction of being the oldest “formally” protected area in Africa! In 1895, with about only 20 southern white rhino’s surviving on earth, and these in Imfolozi, the threat to the species survival was dire, and the proclamation of the Hluhluwe / Imfolozi Game Reserves ensured their survival. Hluhluwe / Imfolozi Game Reserves now “export” white Rhinos to reserves all over Africa where they were originally found. A truly wonderful success story!

As previously stated, it is planned that you will arrive at Hilltop Camp – Hluhluwe before 14h30, in time to check-in, before you assemble at Hilltop reception where you will be introduced to your Ranger and Tracker and depart the lodge at 16h30, for your afternoon/evening game drive (safari). Please check this departure time at Hilltop Reception as these times change depending on the month of the year. This safari is conducted in “open” Land Cruisers with professional Kwa Zulu/Natal Park Rangers. The afternoon/evening game drive/safari last about 3 hours, depending on animal activity. After the game drive/safari, you will return to Hilltop Camp for dinner, which is served in the restaurant. Overnight at Hilltop Camp in an en-suite, air-conditioned chalet, on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.

Full day spent on safari in Hluhluwe with KwaZulu/Natal Parks. A second or even a third-day option is shown at the bottom of this itinerary under the “additional day option.”

Set your alarm clocks for a 05h00 wake up, to report to Hilltop Reception for a 05h30 departure, for the early morning safari. Please check departure times with reception the night before, as these change from month to month, depending on sunrise. All animal viewing is best done in the early morning and late afternoon when it’s cool. This is when the animals are more active, and easier to spot. From about 10h00 till 15h00, during the heat of the day, when it is at its hottest, the animals tend to lie in the shade, not moving, which makes for difficult viewing. Depending on the animal activity, you will return to Hilltop Camp at about 09h00 for breakfast, which is served in Hilltop’s restaurant. Rest of the morning/afternoon is free to laze by the pool, spend time bird watching around camp or to just “chill.” Lunch is for your own account. At about 15h30, you will again assemble at reception to join the afternoon/evening safari. Depending on the animal activity, you will return to camp at about 19h30 / 20h00 for dinner. Overnight at Hilltop Camp in an en-suite chalet, on a dinner, bed, and breakfast basis.
