White Shark / Wildlife / Whale Shark Dive Safari.

3 days cage diving with the Great White Sharks off Dyer Island / Geyser Rock.

“The Great White Shark Capital Of The World”

2 Full days on safari in the Kruger National Park.

3 days / 6 dives on the tropical coral reefs off the coast of Mozambique.

Please remember, this is purely a “suggested itinerary” and we can add / reduce it any way you like, by increasing / decreasing the number of days spend diving or on safari at any of the above locations.

Best time of year: April through October which is peak Great White Season although this itinerary can be done all year round.

Shark Time Table

Please note, the Great White Sharks as well as The Whale Sharks have not read this timetable and have no idea where they are meant to be and when!

Please remember, this is purely a “suggested itinerary” and we can add/reduce it any way you like, by increasing or decreasing the number of days spend diving at any of the above locations.

Dive qualifications needed: OW1 or equivalent.

Where in the world, other than in southern Africa can you get to dive with the Great White Sharks, view lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo and then dive with Whale Sharks and Manta Rays, all in a 13 day period? This is exactly what this dive safari offers. This is also the perfect get-away for those divers who have a non-diving partner. The thrill of viewing the Great White’s from the deck of the dive boat, the excitement of viewing lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo in the wild from an open safari vehicle, and then the sun drenched white beaches of tropical Mozambique. This unique dive safari will entice your non-diving partner to join you on this unbelievable 23 days in Africa. For divers – no enticement required. Just your C card and the desire to experience only what southern Africa can offer.

Please note: The Great White Shark activity takes place on or just below sea level. Full scuba gear is not required for Great White Shark cage diving, as the 6 man cage is attached to the side of the boat and no diving certification or experience is necessary. Your head and shoulders are above sea level until the dive master gives the call to let you know that the Great Whites are approaching. You then submerge your head and shoulders below sea level for the close sightings of the Great Whites, as they swim towards and past the cage. A diver spends about 20-30 minutes in the cage at any one time. After all the divers have had a chance in the cage, those wishing to have a 2nd go in the cage are more than welcome, time permitting. Snorkel equipment and the “breath hold” method are the most popular options, as experience has shown the sounds and bubbles from the regulator are found to be distracting to the extremely sound sensitive Great Whites. Should a diver want to use air and a regulator, he / she must be a certified diver, and must advise us in advance, as this is not carried on board. When you are not in our 6 man cage, refreshments are enjoyed while viewing the Great Whites and other sea life from the viewing deck.

2019:
At a time to be advised the previous evening, on your arrival at Saxon Lodge, you will be collected from Saxon Lodge by a representative of Dive The Big 5, for the 4.5kms or 10-minute road transfer to Kleinbaai Harbour, where we launch the dive boat. On arrival at White Shark Projects’ Dive Shop, in Kleinbaai, the crew will welcome you, and another continental breakfast is served. In Africa, you don’t starve! After the 2nd light breakfast you will be given a safely briefing by the skipper and crew, and you will then walk the 100 meters or so, and board the dive boat, Shark Team, a 36 ft custom-built Catamaran.  Once all are aboard, the Shark Team is pushed, by the tractor, into the ocean, life jackets handed out, and off you go for the 20-minute boat ride to Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. Exactly where you will drop anchor depends solely on the Skipper & DM. Remember, they go daily, weather permitting, and they know where the best place is to drop anchor in order to get the best viewing. Shark Team will spend between 3-4 hours in the vicinity of Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, looking for Great Whites. Shark Team accommodates a maximum of 20 divers and / or non-divers (surface viewers,) and 5-crew, including a videographer. As soon as the anchor has been dropped, the crew of Shark Team starts “chumming” in order to attract the Sharks to the boat. Chum can be likened to a “watery” fish soup, made up of mashed sardines, other fish, and fish-oil. The “bait,” attached to a long piece of rope, is then thrown into the water, and the idea of the bait is to hold the Sharks attention, after it was been attracted to the boat by the chum. As the Great White approached the “bait”, the crew draws the bait up, towards the cage, with the 6-divers in the cage. Quite a thrill. The idea is not to feed the Great White’s, so the crew try not to let the Great White get the “bait.” Once the shark swims away, the crew start all over again, trying to attract the Great Whites to the divers in the cage. And so it goes on…….. There are only 6-divers in the cage at any one time. The divers spend about 20-30 minutes in the cage, sharks permitting. Thereafter, the next group of 6-divers enter the cage, and so it goes on……..

Water temperatures vary from between 10°C to 20°C depending on the time of year, and the viz:- anything from zero to “top to bottom” which could be between 10 and 20 meters. All dive gear, including a “dry” 7mm wetsuit, as well as light snacks, cool drinks, juice, and water are available throughout the morning activity.

After about 3-4 hours at sea, in the vicinity of Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, the Skipper will up anchor, for the 20-minute return boat ride back to Kleinbaai Harbour. On docking at the pier, you will disembark and walk the short distance back to White Shark Projects’ Dive Shop, where a bowl of hot soup and a selection of breads and rolls await you. On board, the Shark Team is the resident videographer, who has captured the entire morning activity on film. Whilst you are enjoying the soup and rolls, the videographer is editing the film, which you can then purchase in the form of a USB stick. After the morning’s activity, White Shark Projects will transfer you back to Saxon Lodge. The rest of the afternoon is free. As you are staying at Saxon Lodge in Gansbaai, it’s quite easy, and safe, to explore the town on foot. There are many local restaurants and pubs in Gansbaai, and Dave and Caron, your hosts at Saxon Lodge, will be more than happy to point you in the right direction. Overnight at Saxon Lodge, in a Standard en suite room, on a bed and breakfast basis.

An early morning game drive, which sets off just after sunrise, and returns to camp at about 09h00 for breakfast, and the afternoon/evening safari /game drive, which departs camp at about 15h30/16h00. Depending on animal activity, you will return to camp from the afternoon/evening safari / game drive at about 18h30/19h00 for dinner.

If your timing gets you to Rhino Post in time to join the afternoon / evening safari, at sunset, you will stop somewhere in the African bush for G&T’s and sundowners, and watch the African sun drop below the horizon. You will then continue with the safari / game drive, looking for the nocturnal animals, lion, leopard, Hyena, bush baby, civet, serval, honey badger, porcupine etc with the aid of a powerful spot lamp. Depending on animal activity you will return to camp at about 18h30/19h00 for dinner, which is served in the ‘boma” alongside a roaring wood fire under the African stars, weather permitting. 2019:

Three full days spent diving with diving with Barra Reef Divers, weather permitting. Currently there are 14 reefs on which to dive at Barra / Tofo, with more reefs being discovered daily. For a full pen-picture of these 14 reefs, please go to our Website Imhambane / Barra / Tofo

At a time to be advised, you will assemble at Barra Reef Divers’ dive centre, www.barrareef.co.za which is a 10-minute walk from Barra Beach Club, to kit up for the first dive of the day, and for dive planning, weather permitting. All dives in Mozambique are best done as early in the morning as possible, as this is when the diving conditions are at their best. No wind, flat calm seas, usually little current, and good viz. As the day progresses, the wind tends to pick-up, whipping the sea and forming “white horses” making it very choppy and dangerous for diving.

For purposes of costing this itinerary all dives are costed as being done on the near “house reefs”. There are surcharges for diving reefs 5 < 10 km’s from the launch site of MZN 300 per dive, and for diving reefs >10 km’s plus from the launch site of MZN 600 per dive (MZN = Mozambique Metical). These far reef dives can be booked directly with Barra Reef Divers and are dependent on a minimum number of divers wishing to dive these far reefs.

After the first dive, you will return to Barra Beach Club for breakfast and surface interval time, before launching for the second dive of the day. If it’s Whale Shark’s you’ve specifically come to Mozambique to see, the best way to encounter Whale Sharks is to trawl the back-line, just beyond the breakers, and look for the tell-tail tail fin of this massive beast. But, because Whale Sharks are so plentiful in these waters, you are likely to encounter these animals on your way to and from the reef. When you do spot a Whale Shark, the skipper will drop you off in front of the animal allowing it to swim up to you. The best way to “dive” with Whale Sharks is on snorkel as the exhaust bubbles from your regulator, if on scuba, often frighten the animals away. After the animal has passed you by, you will climb back into the boat and the skipper will move off to position you in the path of the on-coming Whale Shark, allowing it to swim past you again. This could carry on ad infinitum until either you or the Whale Shark tire first.

Please don’t expect to do more than two dives a day when diving anywhere in Mozambique. Also, remember that you are thousands of kilometres from the nearest medical facility and recompression chamber with the result that all dive operators in Mozambique do not allow, “pushing the limits” and prefer to err on the side of caution, so as to minimise the possibility of any dive accidents.

After the second dive, the rest of the day is free to partake in the following activities, which are available at Barra Reef Divers:

  • Ocean Safari (Minimum 6 people) @ MZN 2 500 p/person.
  • Pansy & Seahorse Excursions (Minimum 6 people at Low Tide) @ MZN 2 500 p/person.
  • Seahorse Lagoon Trip (Minimum 6 people) @ MZN 1 500 p/person.
  • Pansy Island Trip (Minimum 6 people, at Low Tide) @ MZN 1 200 p/person.
  • Coral Garden free diving (Minimum 4 people) @ MZN 1 000 p/person.
  • Arabic Dhow lagoon excursions, survivor island (Minimum 4 people) @ MZN 1 500 p/person.
  • Linga Linga Island Trip (Minimum 6 people, lunch and drinks for own account) @ MZN 2 500 p/person.

Other activities also available in the area are:

  • Sea kayaking.
  • Inhambane town tours.
  • Quad biking.
  • Horse riding.
  • Kite surfing.
  • Deep-sea fishing.

The costs of all of the above activities have not been included in the cost of your tour itinerary, and would be for your own account. As you will note, you are not likely to get bored whilst at Barra Beach Club but night dives are possible, depending on weather conditions. All Night dives are based on a minimum of 6 divers wanting to do the night dive. The cost of a night dive is MZN 3 800 per dive, including full equipment hire, and would be for your own account (please bring your own torch). Please check availability and book directly with the dive shop. Overnight at Barra Beach Club, in a Deluxe Ocean Room, on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis

Other “bits & pieces” of interest:

The cage is a 6-man / woman / person, cage, subject to change, and groups of divers spend roughly 20-30 minutes in the cage during their 1st “dive” session, thereafter they take it in turns for subsequent turns in the cage. Exact times spent in the cage differ from day to day, depending on the number of divers on the boat, and obviously shark activity. No point being in the cage when there are no sharks about! The number of divers, surface viewers is limited to 20, excluding researchers and crew, which allows each diver more cage time and a personalised on-board experience. The boat is licensed to carry 36 people maximum. When you are not in the cage, on-board refreshments can be enjoyed whilst viewing the Great Whites and other sea-life from the upper sun-deck.

When diving anywhere in South Africa or Mozambique, please don’t expect to do more than 2 dives a day. By noon, along the entire east coast of southern Africa the wind tends to pick up quite a bit, causing white caps on the ocean and making diving conditions difficult and even dangerous. As all dives are drift dives, it’s very difficult for the skipper of the Rubber Duck to spot the buoy in rough conditions and even more difficult to spot individual divers as they surface after their dive. The first dive of the day is usually scheduled for sunrise with the second dive of the day being scheduled after surface interval time and breakfast, at about 10h30. By noon, when the wind has picked up, all dives for the day have been completed. If by chance there is no wind, then a 3rd or even 4th dive might be possible, but this is very unlikely. The wind tends to drop by about 17h00, and if it does, then there is the possibility of a night dive. But this can only be confirmed on the day, at about mid-afternoon.

Remember when diving anywhere off the coast of Mozambique you are thousands of kilometres from the nearest medical facility and recompression chamber with the result that all dive operators in Mozambique do not allow “pushing the limits” and prefer to err on the side of caution, so as to minimise the possibility of any dive accidents. There is no technical diving or deep de-co diving in Mozambique.

Please note: The Kruger National Park falls within a “low risk” Malaria area, and Mozambique falls within a “high risk” Malaria area, and we strongly suggest that you consult your doctor about which is the best prophylactic to use to prevent contracting this disease.
